LANSING—Sen. John Proos on Tuesday announced the 3rd annual Southwest Michigan Spirit Tournament is underway.

“This school spirit tournament is designed to foster creativity by giving students and alumni an avenue to showcase their school spirit and tell everyone what makes their school great,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “The response to this competition during the last two years has been phenomenal. Fans of Southwest Michigan schools have submitted thousands of photos and videos that reached tens of thousands of people who have cast hundreds of thousands of votes.”

The first round of the 2015 competition began on Monday at noon and will go through noon on Friday, March 13. The entire competition will span five weeks, ending at noon on Friday, April 10, with the champion receiving a special tribute commending their school.

“I am sponsoring this contest to once again inspire our students and communities to illustrate that no one has more spirit than Southwest Michigan,” Proos said. “Like in the NCAA basketball tournament, schools will compete in a single-elimination bracket contest. Those with the most points will move on to the next round each week. There are several ways to earn points for your school, such as uploading family-friendly videos about how great your school is or submitting unique photos.”

The 31 high schools in the tournament have been divided into four brackets that are named for features that characterize Southwest Michigan. School match-ups were chosen at random.
