Proos praises passage of freedom-to-choose bills

LANSING—The Michigan Senate on Thursday helped ensure workplace fairness and make the state more competitive for jobs by approving freedom-to-choose legislation, said Sen. John Proos.

“Freedom-to-choose means a brighter Michigan future with more jobs, robust economic growth and workers who can decide for themselves what do with their hard-earned dollars,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “Whether you support collective bargaining or not, every Michigan worker should have the freedom to choose what organizations they do or do not join or financially support.

“Making Michigan a freedom-to-choose state will protect the rights and freedoms of every worker in every workplace. It’s the right thing to do for our economy and our workers. I have long supported workplace fairness and am proud help bring it to Michigan.”

Proos noted that freedom in the workplace is an essential building block to Michigan’s long-term success. “As a border community, freedom-to-choose is vitally important to Southwest Michigan,” Proos said. “It will help us compete in the market for new jobs with Indiana – who recently enacted workplace fairness – while also giving us a competitive advantage over the rest of the states in the region.”

Michigan will become the 24th state to pass freedom-to-choose legislation. Indiana became the 23rd state in February. Since that time, nearly 100 businesses have told Indiana officials that the workplace fairness law will factor into their decision on where to locate projects.

“Worker fairness is about helping everyone in Michigan, because when our economy thrives, everyone benefits,” Proos said. “Freedom-to-choose is already having an impact in Indiana and has proven effective in creating jobs in many states for decades. It is time we bring the worker and economic benefits of freedom-to-choose to Michigan.”

Android Industries’ in Fort Wayne is an example of one company that publically stated that Indiana becoming a freedom-to-choose state was a factor in choosing it as an optimal location.

“We have made great strides in the last few years to make Michigan competitive for jobs, and freedom-to-choose will help build a strong economy so our children and grandchildren can choose to live, work and raise a family here in Michigan.”
