Proos: Governor’s plan boosts commitment to education, local communities

Senator John Proos

Senator John Proos

LANSING—After listening to Gov. Rick Snyder’s presentation of his proposed state budget on Wednesday, Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, issued the following statement:

“I think that the governor’s budget recommendations will bring our state’s budget one step closer to the way Southwest Michigan families manage their household budgets.

“We must ensure that the tax dollars we all work so hard for are being efficiently invested in the most important functions of state government—like educating our children and creating an environment for job creation—so that we can provide for the future of our great state.

“I strongly support the governor’s proposal to increase funding for all levels of education. I would like to draw attention to a 75 percent increase in our commitment to career training and career and technical education. I have worked extremely hard over the years to connect students, teachers and businesses with the tools they need to fill the jobs that are available and will be available in our state. Currently, I am working to allow Michigan students to qualify for a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics certification on their diploma so that they can stand out above the crowd.

“We have accomplished much in four years to improve our state, energize our economy and create jobs, yet we still face challenges. I look forward to working with the governor, the Legislature and the people of Michigan to complete yet another year’s budget ahead of time and by living within our means.”
