LANSING, Mich.Sen. John Proos recently honored Vietnam veterans and family members of deceased veterans who served at the St. Joseph County Grange Fair in Centreville.

“Michigan’s Vietnam veterans deserve our respect and appreciation for serving our country in the defense of freedom,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “The vast majority of our Vietnam veterans served our country with honor, yet they were often forgotten when they returned home.

“In commemoration of the 50-year anniversary of the Vietnam War, I was proud to host this moving lapel pinning ceremony to give long-overdue recognition to more than 260 Vietnam veterans and their families on behalf of a grateful nation.”

Proos was joined by Rep. Aaron Miller, R-Sturgis, to present Vietnam War Commemorative Lapel Pins to Southwest Michigan veterans who served on active duty at any time during the Vietnam War era, regardless of location.

Prior to the ceremony, Proos hosted a breakfast at the fair for area veterans and first responders. Residents attending the ceremony were also able to see the Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial, which contains the names of more than 2,600 veterans from Michigan who lost their lives in the war.

“We can never fully repay our Vietnam veterans and their families for the tremendous sacrifices they made in defense of freedom,” Proos said. “While we can recognize the service of our veterans, the traveling memorial is a reminder of the true cost of our freedom.”

The pins are made possible by the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, which was authorized by Congress and established under the secretary of defense as a way to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families in hometown America. “I want to thank the St. Joseph County United Way for helping with the breakfast and the St. Joseph County Grange Fair for agreeing to host the lapel pinning ceremony,” Proos said.
