LANSING, Mich. — Sen. John Proos is reminding Southwest Michigan families planning a summer getaway this year about the impact of tourism on the state and local economy.
“Michigan offers families a wide variety of outstanding outdoor summer activities, such as boating, fishing, golfing and attending local festivals,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “At the end of last year, we saw evidence of the impact that tourism has on our region. As residents look at planning their summer trip, I encourage everyone to consider vacationing this summer here in Michigan and taking advantage of the state’s numerous natural and cultural resources and family-friendly outdoor activities.”
According to the late 2016 Business Outlook for West Michigan by the W. E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, leisure and hospitality sectors in Berrien County grew by more than 8 percent over the same period in 2015.
The report noted that in the third quarter of 2016, leisure and hospitality job growth accounted for nearly half of all non-farm new jobs.
“With nearly 11,000 inland lakes and more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, Michigan offers families an outstanding summer experience,” Proos said. “Travelers can also take advantage of our beautiful beaches, historic lighthouses and world-class golf courses. A local summer getaway is a great way to relax and have fun with the entire family — all while supporting the local community and small businesses.”
