Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, presents a local veteran with a Vietnam War Commemorative Lapel Pin as part of an effort to recognize Michigan's Vietnam veterans for their service during the war. Proos hosted the ceremony in Bridgman with Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kowall, R-White Lake, to help thank the area's Vietnam veterans and their families. During the ceremony, the senators honored more than 250 Vietnam War era veterans from Southwest Michigan.

Baker, of Coloma, attended Buchanan Public Schools before enlisting in the Army in 1967. His military actions earned him the Distinguished Service Cross (the nation's second-highest honor for a member of the Army) and a purple heart as a result of receiving 13 wounds as point man of his infantry squad. Baker is now a minister, has joined Lest we Forget to share his experiences and was Proos" honored guest during the Senate ceremony.

Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, (center) joins Neil Vernasco (center left) and representatives from Michigan Works! at a special tribute presentation in Lansing. Vernasco was honored as a Michigan Works! Alumnus who ultimately earned a new career in power plant operations at Consumers Power. The special tribute presented to Vernasco states Neils informed and proactive approach to finding a new career is certainly a commendable achievement. By diligently pursuing the opportunities before him, and taking advantage of the valuable assistance offered by Michigan Works!, Neil has created many opportunities for himself and has provided a terrific example for others to follow. The tribute was signed by Proos, Gov. Rick Snyder, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton and state Rep. Sharon Tyler.

Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph; Rep. Matt Lori, R-Constantine; and Rep. Sharon Tyler, R-Niles, presented a special tribute to Dr. Fred L. Mathews at the Michigan Capitol in recognition of his longevity as chairman of Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees. Mathews was honored as the longest serving community college chairman in the country. After being unanimously re-elected, Mathews began his 47th year as chairman.
